August and September, nice time to remember.

We had all kinds of weather, from hot and humid, to windy, rainy, low cloud bases, and a couple of great soaring days. We also had an away weekend and many firsts.

FIRST SOLO
Martin Wilkey flew solo in a glider for the first time on August 21st. Great job Martin! Congratulations from all.

SUMMER CAMP 2005
We had our summer camp early in August. Charlie Hunter wrote a nice article about it on page 4. (Large file. Be patient.)

C BADGE AND FIRST 2+ HOURS
Saturday 20 August, Andrew Ross completed his "C" level badge, this was on his ~~40th flight or so. The day was quite challenging - even the experienced pilots were just breaking 30 minutes - so he did quite well! Three photos - final, touchdown, post landing - by the way it was a great landing! Andrew - I would recommend letting your school paper know about this event as well!

LAST RESORT
Saturday, September 17th, we had a weekend away. A few miles south of Muncie is an airport by the formidable name of "The Last Resort". We spent Saturday afternoon flying in very good conditions and throwing horse shoes, Saturday evening eating steaks and salad and the famous "Chris Carpenter upside-down cake", Saturday night camping out.
Sunday we woke up to a delicious pancake breakfast, flew all day under good conditions and towed the planes back to Alex. Terry Wools took advantage of the good soaring weather and flew to Ohio to bring our trophy. The owners of the place were very nice and we all had a lot of fun.

FIRST GLIDER FLIGHT
Sunday, September 18th, Gerry Whitson finally convinced his girlfriend Susan to get in the glider with him and take a soaring flight. It was a short flight, but a nice one. She liked it! We never had any doubts about it.

SILVER BADGE
August 22nd was a nice day for me. I finished all of the requirements for the FAI Silver Badge. I had had the 5+ for a long time and I had gained the 1km (3280ft) altitude. I wrote an article about it on page 3. Turn up the volume!

FIRST FLIGHT IN THE PW-5
Dan Dewitt flew our PW5 for the first time on August 6th. Congrats! That little World Class plane is going to be flying 5+ hours again soon.
Ready Rolling Takeoff Final approach Roll back Thumbs up!

VISITOR FROM GERMANY
Sigfried Voss came to visit our club on 3rd September. He is a good friend of mine who used to invite me to be his soaring passenger when I lived in Germany. This time I was the pilot he was the passenger. He liked it so much that he asked me to fly again the very next week. He also brought me the A Badge that I had earned in Germany, with a nice message from mein olden Kameraden.

ALL OVER THE PLACE
Everyday we are bombarded with bad news from around the world. Terrorism is at the top of the list, specially around September. Some people are becoming pesimistic. Well, we glider pilots, who see the world from a different perspective have learned a couple of things about human nature. Last September 17th, we visited the Last Resort airport, and we could see once again the truth about mankind: 99.9% of all people out there are VERY NICE. They are all over. Cheers for the nice people! The ones who smile at you the first time they see you, the ones who ask you your name and tell you theirs, the people who introduce you to their families. The friendly people you never hear about in the news.

CU at the field!
