CISS CROSS COUNTRY CHALLENGE is off to a good start!
April 27th brought the first race day of the contest with three competitors submitting valid flights in the two classes. Ron Clarke and Brad Hays in the Red Tail class (for pilots who have previously achieved the gold badge distance of 300KM) and Kurt Ristow in the Kestrel class (for pilots who have not earned gold distance).made the best of so-so conditions to get the contest under way. Although heights of up to 4800' msl were seen, there were also a few low points near 1200' above the ground that kept the pilots humble. Average lift of about 200 fpm and distances of 61 miles and 77 miles were achieved between Terry, Metro, Sheridan and Boone County turnpoints. See the score sheet below for results to date. Another race day was attempted on May 3rd but only two pilots were able to complete the minimum distance, so it was a no-contest day. The year long race is open to pilots of all levels of experience, so click on this link and read the Complete CISS XCountry Rules in PDF format. Don't forget to take your GPS and get yourself on the scoresheet. – Don Taylor

New Members
Martin (Marty) WilkeyMarty actually joined late last season. Welcome Marty! We apologize that we did not recognize you until now. Marty has not had any prior aviation experience but has some valuable knowledge that could help the club. He is a Firefighter and Paramedic with the Pike Township Fire Department. He has finally reached a point in his career when he gets all his weekends off and wants to spend some of that with CISS. Mike Beckage is his Mentor.

Greg Linderman Welcome Greg! Greg's name may be familiar to you as he was a Student Member about five years ago. Greg said he was too young at the time and did not appreciate what an opportunity CISS was. Now that he is very close to starting at the Air Force Academy, he wishes he had kept it up. But Greg is no longer letting the grass grow under his feet. He was first to sign up for instruction on April 24th and took 4 flights that morning. If Greg chooses to go to the Academy, he will be leaving sometime in June. Dave Newill is Greg's Mentor

Gerald SimpsonWelcome Gerald! Gerald is a Dentist and lives in Marion. He and his wife Sue visited on April 24th and after a ride in the Grob with Dave Newill, decided that he wants to be a Glider Guider. He has no prior flight experience. Ray Dosh is his Mentor.

Mario Lazaga
Welcome Mario! I understand that Mario came to our safety meeting and some members met him there. He works at Roche in software design and lives in Carmel. Mario has worked in Germany previously and while there got into Soaring. He has 100 flights in his logbook, 99 by winch! But, only 1 aerotow, he is looking forward to learning more about aerotow here. I hate to say it Mario but, this is a choice you cannot refuse! His experience has been in ASK 13s and ASK 21s. Mario's Mentor is Ken Martin.
