And The CISS Cross Country Challenge Continues...
Complete CISS XCountry Rules in PDF format
Late May produced some exceptional soaring conditions and I'm sure we'll be talking about the "May of 2003" many years from now. May 13 saw heights to 8300 feet, only to be exceeded on May 24 with achieved altitudes of 9000 feet. And some "newbies" like Chris Carpenter and Scott Ortman and Bill Paris fledged the nest with flights of 66 to 170 miles. The icing on the cake, however, was Ron Clarke's six hour record flight of 321 miles up to northern Illinois and back on May 26 to set the first diamond distance out and return record from Indiana. Unfortunately, as of this writing I can only report one contest day for May due to pesky soaring gremlins. Ristow's GPS used up all of its track log memory capability and erased his track for one day, and Ortman suffered an electrical blackout minutes after takeoff on his best day. And I'm still awaiting contest flight applications for a couple of days. No contest day will be scored unless three pilots submit flight data, so for the time being the results for May are as follows: . Don't forget to take your GPS and get yourself on the scoresheet.
