CIRCLING THE HOLIGHAUS WAY Recent discussion on the Standard Cirrus website brought forth this article written by Dick Johnson, based on conversations he had had years ago with the late Klaus Holighaus, sailplane competitor, designer, and builder. This link will take you directly to the article. Click here Jeff Melin NEW TOW ROPES Just a note to inform you that as of 7-25-04, all tow ropes have been taken out of service and replaced with new 5/16th inch rope. This rope is about 1/3 stronger than the 1/4 in. rope we have used and MUST be used in conjunction with weak links at both the tow plane and glider ends of the rope. This is done to address the concern about frequent rope breaks we have experienced this year. Statistically, this should reduce breaks of the tow rope but remember: THE WEAK LINKS... ARE STILL WEAK!! The entire assembly needs to be inspected several times daily - especially the WEAK LINKS!! Spare Weak Links have been prepared and are in the trailer hanging from the hooks formerly used for ground ropes. All hardware should be protected by tennis ball halves and plastic cups. Please take care to replace any missing Weak Link protective gear from the supply located on the storage shelves in the hangar. If additional WEAK LINKS are needed on short notice, they can be fabricated from 1/4" rope in the hangar. Should new weak Links or a main rope be needed, please notify John Dittrich, myself, or both. Splicing the larger rope is quite difficult as the fids we have been able to find are not the proper size. We are happy to make up new ropes as needed, please, just notify us. Jeff Melin |
