WHAT A MONTH THIS JUNE!
The weather has been teasing us, giving us rain, wind and low cloudbases one weekend, and sunshine,
great thermals and mild breezes next weekend. And in the good weekends, nature gives us cloudy mornings to test our
patience and commitment. The glider camp was flyable only 3 days, but the students made the best of it.
On good weekends, a lot has been accomplished by a small group of student pilots progressing at similar rates.
The more experienced pilots also had their own triumphs.
Congratulations to all!
RATINGS REMINDER
from the Glider Examiner (Mike Rielage)
This Soaring Season has passed the half-way mark.
If you intend to accomplish a new or added glider rating during this year, now is the time to firm up your plans.
1. Get with a specific instructor who is willing to work to bring you to readiness for the practical test and endorse your application.
2. Develop (and stick with) a schedule to prepare for your practical test.
3. Contact the Examiner to find a couple of jointly available times for teh conduct of the practical test.
There have been two practical tests passed this year to date. Congratulations to Gerry Whitson for an added Glider rating and to Mike Beckage for his original pilot rating as a Private Glider Pilot.
You can contact Mike Rielage via e-mail at: mielage@AOL.com or 317-291-6330.
FIRST BAROGRAM
Silver Altitude requires that you have an altitude gain of 1Km (1000m) or 3280ft.
Alexandria being at 900ft MSL and having a pattern entry point at 1000ft, Silver Altitude would need a minimum
of 4180ft AGL for the thermal updraft to decrease to 200fpm. Saturday, 26th June, Mike Rielage said "it is doable".
I said, "I don't know how to operate the barograph", to which Marty Hudson said "I'll help you" meaning "don't make up excuses."
So I tried, and almost made it, but I was short by 280ft. See the resulting barogram and stay in touch. May be next month.

8th PLACE
Ron Clarke took part in the Sports Class Nationals in Ionia, MI this June.
The contest was flown over 5 of 10 days, and Ron (ZA) did very well indeed.
Out of 31 pilots, he got to be as high as 4th place in one of the tasks.
His final overall place was 8th. Congratulations Ron!
THE TROPHY IS BACK
Ron knew June 27th was such a good day, that it was a pity to think that the Ceasar's Creek trophy was
in Ohio. So he flew there and brought it back...again.
Congratulations Ron...again.
SEE THE GRAPHIC OF THE FLIGHT
You can tell, by the longer distance between thermals that the way there was faster and easier than the way back.
Look at that stretch from Richmond,IN to Lebanon, OH without a single turn!!
It was windy that day, and the wind was blowing almost straight East. It must have taken a lot of work.
Hey Ron! Didn't they teach you that you are supposed to stay up-wind for safety? :)
Great job!

FIRST GLIDER SOLO
Just a couple of minutes after landing, Craig Bixby smiles to the camera. He not only got his A badge, but because his first
solo flight lasted 50 minutes he also obtained his B badge! Congrats Craig.
NEW PRIVATE PILOT
Jeff Eaton crewed fror Ron Clarke in the Sport Class Nationals. And while waiting between launches, he
took his practical test for glider and passed. That's what I call using your time effectively.
What do you do when you get your private pilot license? Well, bring your family and friends for a ride, of course!
Congratulations Jeff!
YET ANOTHER PRIVATE PILOT
Mike Beckage had two excellent days to remember this June. On father's day, he flew 1h 42min. and earned his C badge.
Then, a week later, he took his practical test for glider and passed. Congratulations, congratulations Mike!
FIRST 2+ HOURS
Have you ever made your wife AND your daughter wait for you for 2 hours, and when you finally show up, they're happy?!
Well, Gerry Simpson managed to do just that!
On father's day, he took off in one of the Blaniks and found the conditions so good that he just decided to stretch his flight to 2h 52min.
His wife was happy to see him having his fun on father's day.
He didn't know (or pretended not to know) that his wife had brought him chicken for lunch.
Congratulations Gerry on your first 2hr flight towards your bronze badge! We are sure you enjoyed your cold chicken.
YET ANOTHER FIRST 2+ HOURS
Yours truly also had his 2+ hour flight this June. Lot's of fun, lots of work, but no lunch :(
