NEXT CLUB MEETING: JULY 18, 2002 7:00 P.M. LEPPERT & HENSLEY, CARMEL

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The past month has been more than interesting for CISS on a number of fronts - not the least of which was a series of complaints directed towards operations a couple of weeks ago. I received a number of responses to the email I sent out, and I am happy to report that there was a great amount of consistency in those responses about what did, or did not occur. The positive side is that those club members who were forced to be involved in a very ugly situation with another pilot appear to have handled the situation with a great amount of restraint and diplomacy considering the extreme nature of the actions of the other pilot. My congratulations to all involved for the handling of that incident.

The down side is that we had an incident where situational awareness, head out of the cockpit, or whatever you want to call it apparently suffered. With our increased traffic, we all need to talk to ourselves a little more when near the airport, and especially when entering the pattern, to make sure we are seeing and hearing all other traffic that we must be aware of. Our safety committee is looking at both our pattern use and that of the power traffic to give us all a better understanding of where everyone is, or should be. Then of course, theres thems who aint where they is supposed to be! And, as Kurt Ristow spoke of in last month's WT, we all need to make sure we are

calling out MSL, whether we set the altimeter that way or not. If we all call MSL, then the need for the follow-up call "Was that AGL or MSL?" won't be needed, and those who burn avgas won't be confused - or worse!

Jeff Melin, our membership chair, has submitted a summary in this month's WT on page 2 that covers the results of a special board meeting to deal with certain membership issues that had to be resolved. If there are any questions, please let Jeff or any board member know.

The relocation committee continues to investigate the options available for the future of CISS. If you have any thoughts, suggestions, etc., please share your ideas with Mike Warren or any member of that committee.

And last, but not least, mark your calendar for the club meeting this month on July 18, at 7:00 P.M., Leppert & Hensley. We hope to have available what should be a very enjoyable half hour or so of video from a recent Nationals contest. Hope to see you there.

SOARING BOOKLIST
A new booklist is available on the internet as mentioned by our own Jeff Melin. It was developed by the webmaster for the Standard Cirrus user group he belongs to. Every item links directly to a source--Amazon.com, Knauff & Grove, SSA. There are also links to the major soaring vendors. It's a good place to start your search for Soaring literature. You can find it at http://www.owp.us/Soaring.asp
