Happy New Airport for 2004!
On January 1st, following a long tradition of the club, we had our Polar-Bear, Darn-the-cold, first flying day of the new year. There were quite a few of us there. The weather had sympathy for us and gave us a break; everybody flew at least once. We all got to wish Mr. Knott a happy new year. We learned about the intricacies of opening and closing the hangar door, and the cost of it if we break it.
The was a sizable crosswind from the south, which translated in a strong tail wind at the base leg, and runway re-alignment on final approach. It was a nice day for all, who are now looking forward to the start of the 2004 soaring season at the Knotts Airfield. More pictures here.
Furbee is watching you.
Who at Winter Banquet did not have a great time?
Not only did we get to wish all of our fellow members a happy new year, we also ate a very hearty, calorie-loaded, tasty dinner, we congratulated several pilots for their 2003 accomplishments, and we also had the chance to meet the best friend of little animals in central Indiana, and the most patient man in the world: The "Bird Lady" and her husband. What a lesson in dedication and patience! Makes you want to help..doesn't it? And Who wasn't charmed by Furbee? Cute and adorable, with those gigantic owl eyes and that 270 degrees-turning neck. Small "as a can of beer" said the Bird Lady. See more pictures here.

Glider Ground School.
Just as planned, the glider ground school started at 8:30 am Saturday January 10th. Not 8:29 nor 8:31 EXACTLY at 8:30am. I got the nickname Mario "Late" because I arrived at 8:32am, after Mario "Early" Zambrano was already there. The dog ate my homework (that's why I was late. Really.) The 3rd Saturday, after the bell rang, many of us gathered to eat our lunch together after school. Mike Rielage has been teaching us about the FAA regulations, the law, basic aerodynamics and what to read in preparation for the pilot's written exam. Nyal Williams talked to us about weight and balance calculations. The glider ground school will continue through February.
