CROSS COUNTRY SOARING (Part 3)

The conditions are turning real favorable for a SILVER C Distance attempt now:

* The air is drying out so thermals heights will increase.
* Crops will begin to be harvested in Sept. so there will be lots of outlanding options if the need arises ! - But hurry as a delay will mean you won't be able to make an attempt until May next year if you don't do it in Sept .

PREPARATION FOR THE FLIGHT ( 32 MILES )

1) Plot out several options - best course will be downwind so consider flights to the NE , E or SE from Alex.
2) Calculate how high you can tow to ( 1% rule limits your release height).
3) Familiarize yourself with the Club Barograph or a GPS recorder if you plan to use one.
4) Familiarize yourself with the SSA Awards Form (B-1) that you will need to complete.

Then on a day when cloudbases are 5000msl and the winds are light MAKE A PRACTISE FLIGHT AS FOLLOWS:

* Fly to Elwood airfield .
* Climb back up at Elwood and fly home to Alex ( Try not to stop and thermal unless you are below glideslope to make it back)
* Do this 2 times and you will have covered more than the 32 miles needed for a Silver C flight.

Note :
* Speed up in sink ( no more than 10 knots)
* Slow down in lift ( to min sink speed -do you know what that speed is ?)
* Don't fly back over any areas of sink - deviate up to 30 degrees if you have to.
* Note there is an excellent N/S airstrip SE of Elwood and W of Frankton if you need it.

If you complete the practise flight successfully you are ready to make a Silver Badge Distance attempt. Good luck.

ENJOY.

FLY SAFELY.
