pilot Tony Johnson prepares to take off in 87Z with a guest (see if
you can guess who it is!). When Tony started the engine, nobody bothered
to inform the guest of the amazing aerodynamic qualities of the hopper
lid, which caught him squarely between the eyes. "Just wanted to test
the helmet", said Tony. Did anyone also bother to tell the guest there
are no seat belts in the hopper? Hang on tight! - tongue in cheek
of course. |

LINKS PAGE UPDATED
The
"Soaring Links" page on the main CISS web site has been updated
to, hopefully, better meet the needs of club members. The intent
is not to include everything available on soaring because there
are other sites (links) which are more complete as a resource. However,
if you have something you use frequently and think others might
enjoy, please send your request(s) to the following address and
I will be happy to post them.

THE
TROPHY IS BACK IN TOWN
by
Terry Wools

After
several attempts, I finally pulled it off. On Sunday July 14th
I retrieved the Caesar Creek Cross Country Challenge Trophy. But
before I carry on about the flight a special thanks goes out to
John Dittrich who graciously volunteered to be my retrieval crew
in the event of a land out.
With a promising forecast for the day, I rigged my ASW-15 for
another attempt to make CCSC in Ohio. Cu started about 10:00.
Winds were light out of the NE with expected high of 86 degrees.
I got launched early at 11:00 thanks to Rob Morgan (Crew Chief
for the day) and found 2kt lift over Terry Airport right after
tow. I got up too 5000msl and pointed my nose toward Caesar Creek.
On the way I made good time and got up as high as 6500msl. By
the time I my left wingtip passed Richmond Airport, I had invested
3hrs into the flight. The winds were now more easterly and were
partly the reason why I wasn't making good time. I was comfortable
with the strength of the day so I said to myself, "today's the
day, I'm doing this even if it means staying the night in the
clubhouse at CCSC", so I pressed on into Ohio.
The
further east I went, the lower the cloud base got. It got down
to 5000msl and the visibility got worse. Thanks to GPS and using
IFR(I follow road) I was able to stay on track and was in striking
distance now.
Passing
Hook Airport I had 15nm to go and knew then that I made it. 3
miles out I called in to Caesar Creek my intentions to take back
the trophy and got landing instructions for right pattern on runway
9. I came in a little high from base to final so with full boards
out and a good sideslip, I made an impressive demonstration how
well an ASW-15 can burn off altitude when needed.
After a successful landing, several well-done Triple Tango came
out over the radio. They jokingly tried getting me to join their
club so they might not have to relinquish the trophy.
