Safety Briefing (continued)

Guests at the field usually do NOT know our procedures and do not understand what can and cannot damage our planes. No guests or visitors should be allowed east of the tent without an assigned member. Children in particular must be kept under control. We must keep all non-members away from moving aircraft, ropes, equipment. It is OK to have them look at or sit in a plane, but again only under the control of a member.

The PW-5 sits slightly North of center with the Left Wing Low. Please re-check to see that the canopy is secure at all times. A wind gust can whip the canopy open, hinged forward and break it off!

Tie downs need to be secure at end of day. A final check by the crew or assigned person is MANDATORY!

Do not hook up a glider to the ground tow rope unless you and the driver are both ready to move the plane. Mis-communications can result in a glider getting pulled with no one ready.

Read the A/C status board before moving airplanes! No reason to move a broken or restricted aircraft!

Towing w/out a wing man - PW-5 - If you are concerned - get a wing walker! Towing driver is responsible for plane.

Operations Best Practice

Endevor to keep the mid-field stub clear of aircraft and people as much as possible. It is completely possible for an aircraft to take off for either end of the grass and pass over the stub at low altitiude.

Terry Traffic includes small jets which have much larger patterns then single engine airplanes. You may not be able to see a downwind, base, final for a Lear or Cessna jet. In fact, most of these will try to fly a straight in to save fuel and time if possible. If you are fortunate you will see the landing light low over the end of the runway. THIS MEANS WE MUST LISTEN TO THE RADIOS!

Radio communications from the planes to Terry traffic should be answered from the base radio or the Team Director of Operations with glider advisorys - "Cessna calling Terry, be advised of gliders in the area - [ more specifics if possible]" . WE CANNOT give order over the radio. WE ARE NOT A TOWER! Please be polite, brief, accurate with your radio communications. Certainly we can help guide our traffic, especially when there are more than one glider on final. "First Glider ( call sign if known ) please take the hard surface, Second Glider ( call sign if known ) please land on the grass." For example.

The Base Radio should be hooked up to the big antenna for best reception and broadcasting.

Radio's should be on before entering the glider. This helps you know what is going on in the traffic pattern. As your glider is rolled onto the active concrete runway, announce on the radio " Glider [Type] taking the active, Terry Midfield for departure to the North/South" We do have rights to fly - and this announcement helps. In the pattern, announce your position clearly as Down Wind, Base, Final for Runway XX grass or Hard Surface. Do announce all three positions.

Director of Operations [DO] or ADO , Instructor and Tow Pilot for the day should meet before starting operations to discuss Safety, Weather, communications, or other things that might impact the days activity. Any of the three can stop all operations for a Safety reason, all three are needed to agree to resume operations.
